The Truth behind Caged-Eggs

370,000kg of eggs are consumed annually in HK and most eggs come from cage hens:

  • average space per hen is less than the size of an A4 sheet of paper

  • forced molting: through weeks of starvation and being kept in blackout shed, hens are stressed out and frightened; causing them to lose feather so as to rejuvenate for next laying cycle

  • 1-day old male chicks are grounded up alive or suffocated to death because they cannot produce eggs

Switzerland was the first country to ban the use of cages for housing laying hens in 1992 while the European Union adopted a ban on battery-cages in 2012. Unfortunately, until now, most eggs consumed in Hong Kong still come from battery-cages.

Suffering Animals

Hens need to express their natural behaviors to feel secure:

  • nest building

  • perching

  • foraging

  • scratching

  • dust bathing

Hens being confined in battery-cage for entire life can never perform any of these behaviors:

  • eat and sleep on their own urine and manure

  • suffer from high stress and poor health
