The Good Egg Award – a global recognition for ethical sourcing
Planet For All teams up with Compassion in World Farming International to introduce the internationally renowned Good Egg Award into the region, encouraging the catering and food industry to abandon caged eggs.
Starting from 2007, the Good Egg Award, announced by Compassion in World Farming International, has been presented to catering, retail, and food businesses that commit to use cage-free eggs within five years, with award-giving ceremonies held annually in Europe. Since its establishment, over 100 million egg-laying hens are spared from close confinement every year by the awarded companies. As a recognition of social responsibility, the Good Egg Award improves company image and customer confidence. Awardees include well-known international brands, such as IKEA, Pret A Manger, Burger King and Starbucks.
Why apply?
Good Egg Award recognises and celebrates the achievements of market-leading, food service and retail companies for making tangible improvements to the welfare of the animals reared for food in their supply chains.

Winning an award enables you to:
  • Demonstrate your leadership as an ethical organisation
  • Show that your policies are aligned with your brand values
  • Manage risk by having greater transparency and traceability in your supply chain
  • Increase consumer confidence in your brand and meet the growing demand for higher-welfare products

We are very pleased to introduce the Good Egg Award into Hong Kong by working with Planet For All. We hope that Hong Kong can be a part of the worldwide, cage-free movement. Together, we will build a more compassionate, ethical food system that demonstrates corporate responsibility, for a future that embraces harmony between humans, animals and the planet.

Jeff Zhou, China Chief Representative of Compassion in World Farming International

Eligibility Criteria
Companies applying for the Good Egg Award must meet the following standards
  • Commit to adopting a cage-free egg sourcing policy within 5 years, covering all shell eggs, egg products, and ingredients, such as liquid eggs, egg powder, and soft-centered eggs.*
  • Prohibit the use of combination and limited access cage systems.**
  • Publicly announce the policy and submit annual progress reports.*

*Applicable to the entire group or the company’s operations in specific regions (e.g., Hong Kong or China).

**Combination (referred to in English as “combi”) and limited access systems are compact, multi-tier cage systems where hens are confined within a single tier. The partitions within the cage limit the movement of hens, and only those in the first tier have access to the floor. If these systems exist in your current supply chain, they must be eliminated within a maximum of 5 years. All shell eggs and egg products must be sourced from qualified cage-free systems.

Guidelines for Retailers:

The cage-free egg policy applies to all eggs sold in-store, including private-label (own brand) and branded products. For egg products and ingredients, the cage-free policy applies only to private-label products.

Eligible Non-Cage Farming Systems
  • Barn*
  • Free-range
  • Organic
*Please note that we do not grant awards to any farming systems that involve combination cages (enriched cages, colony cages, or combi-cages), limited access systems where hens could be permanently enclosed, or housing models that restrict the movement of hens within tiers via internal partitions.
Eligible companies may contact Planet For All and subsequently submit an application form signed at the director level to apply.

Suppose the application is made based on a commitment. In that case, Planet For All and Compassion in World Farming International will maintain contact with the awardees during the commitment period to evaluate progress and provide ongoing support.
