What is "Planet for All" (PFA)?

Planet for All is a non-profit organisation registered in Hong Kong since 2020. Though building corporate partnerships as well as reaching out to the public, we are dedicated to re-establishing harmony between mankind, planet Earth and animals by advocating a sustainable plant-based lifestyle. Achieving harmony between humans and animals requires us to prioritise the welfare of animals in captivity, especially that of production animals in industrial farming systems. While we encourage the consumption of plant-based diets, we also work with and support businesses to foster changes in their animal-sourced food supply─to make it more humane for production animals.

Why Cage-Free Eggs matter?

In Hong Kong, the total egg consumption is approximately 180,000 tonnes per year. On average, each person consumes about 24 kilograms of eggs annually, making it the second highest in the world* Unfortunately, in Asia, approximately 90% of hens are being raised in battery cages**, which represent some of the worst animal cruelty and raise other important concerns, including food safety. It is reasonable to assume that the majority of eggs supplied and consumed in Hong Kong are sourced from hens raised in battery cages. This assumption is supported by the fact that the major egg-exporting countries to Hong Kong—namely, China, Japan, and Thailand—are all situated in Asia.

Legal and regulatory changes around the world reflect growing concerns about cage hens and eggs. Following the European Union's mandate to phase out battery cage egg production by 2012 for its member states, ten American states have also banned the sale and production of cage eggs.***. In contrast, Hong Kong is lagging behind these global trends.

What is "Cage-Free Hong Kong" ?

To help end the abuse of hens, Planet for All is launching the "Cage-Free Hong Kong" campaign, which aims to encourage businesses to voluntarily transition to a cage-free egg supply. This  initiative aims to engage with businesses that supply and utilise hen eggs, including restaurants, hospitality, food services, retailers, food manufacturers, distributors, and egg producers, as well as the public. The establishment of "Cage-Free Hong Kong" reflects our renewed commitment —,to promoting ethical consumption and sourcing of popular animal-sourced foods.

Through this newsletter, we aim to provide useful information about local and global efforts to transition to cage-free egg sourcing. It is specifically designed for our industry partners and institutional partners who are interested in aligning with global trends towards an ethical egg supply chain.
